Minneapolis: Sheridan Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony – November 11

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Commissioner Liz Wielinski invite you to join for a special Veterans Day dedication ceremony at the site of the Sheridan Veterans Memorial.

Northeast Minneapolis Veterans and residents from the Sheridan neighborhood have worked tirelessly to make this memorial along the Mississippi River a reality. A group of thirteen NE Minneapolis WWII Veterans known as the “Freedom Fighters” led by the late Ed Karbo Sr. joined forces with the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization in 2005 and approached MPRB about locating the memorial in what became Sheridan Memorial Park.

The Sheridan Veterans memorial is being built in honor of all Veterans, a tribute to those whose lives were lost or forever altered, and a living reminder of the hope of a world with lasting peace. A grand opening celebration of the memorial will occur in spring of 2014 when the central sculpture is completed and installed.

We thank the following individuals and groups for their support of this project: Rep. Diane Loeffler, the Puzak Family, Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, and all of the many Veterans who helped create the vision for this space.

The ceremony will feature music by the Macalester College Pipe Band, remarks by MPRB and public dignitaries – including Minnesota National Guard Command Sergeant Major Rollyn Wold, a performance by Twin Cities’ vocalist Anita McColley, raising of the flags by the Minnesota National Guard Honor Guard, and comments by Howard Weller, age 85, and the last surviving member of the NE Minneapolis WWII Veterans group who first envisioned the memorial site.
